  11. Shu and Tefnut, the twin lion gods, are opposites. Shu and Tefnut 
  12. are male and female, hot and cold, dry and wet, public and private, 
  13. intellectual and emotional, et cetera and so forth.
  14.  
  15. Alone, either one would be dangerously unbalanced, and would have 
  16. earned an evil reputation for his or her excesses. But Shu and 
  17. Tefnut are always together. Each defines the other; each requires 
  18. the other. Each balances and tempers the other. Shu's most prominent 
  19. headpiece, the feather of Ma'at, emphasizes this balance, as does 
  20. the representation of Shu through the use of this feather alone, as 
  21. a single hieroglyph. Shuti is Shu and Tefnut together, under one 
  22. name, as one composite being.
  23.  
  24. The Order of Shuti is dedicated to the study of Opposition and 
  25. Balance, Opposition in Balance, Balance in Opposition, and Balance 
  26. through Opposition. By 'Opposition' we don't mean just conflict 
  27. (though of course that is included). We will study and use 
  28. opposites, the actions and forces of these opposites, the ranges of 
  29. existence between these opposites, the balance of these opposites, 
  30. and the dynamic magical implications thereof.
  31.  
  32. One obsolete philosophy of magic was that to achieve balance, the 
  33. magician had to experience and participate in the extremes (often 
  34. the extremes of good and evil).
  35.  
  36. There are simply too many different pairs of opposites and extremes 
  37. for a magician to experience them all. Further, many extremes are 
  38. downright dangerous, such as extreme hot and cold, unnecessarily 
  39. evil and unlawful acts, and excessively self-sacrificing acts. But 
  40. the Initiate of Shuti will recognize and work with any and all 
  41. opposites/extremes, and with the ranges and balances between them, 
  42. whenever and however appropriate.

  44. "For with no purpose the force of the mind must fall..." This study 
  45. of opposition and balance can support many diverse goals.
  46.  
  47. One such purpose will be to study and understand the physical and 
  48. objective universe, and the magical and subjective universe, so that 
  49. we may change those universes (per the challenge of Michael, found 
  50. in the _Diabolicon_'s Statement of Satan ArchDaimon).
  51.  
  52. Other goals and purposes will be supported; this is but one which 
  53. has been defined and will be offered to interested Initiates. Any 
  54. and all sets of opposites will be valid and appropriate areas of 
  55. study for the Initiate. The universes are our library and our 
  56. laboratory. But some topics will be of global interest:
  57.  
  58. Life and Death are the major pair of Opposites. We will work to 
  59. recognize all forms and degrees of these opposites. We will work to 
  60. always strive for Life, to always reject Death.
  61.  
  62. One set of Opposites of major interest is Self and Not-Self. How do 
  63. we define our Selves? When we Remanifest continued existence without 
  64. these bodily shells, how will we then define our Selves? How will we 
  65. differentiate between personal _Xeper_ and the willful modification 
  66. of the external universe?
  67.  
  68. We will also study Set and the Opposite Self, HarWer. We will study 
  69. them as individual entities, as Opposite Selves, and as Satan (Set 
  70. and HarWer fused).
  71.  
  72. Related to these above topics, we will examine the opposites of your 
  73. own Higher Self, that towards which you _Xeper_, and your Lower 
  74. Self, that which you Will outgrow.
  75.  
  76. Some other pairs of opposites are knowledge and ignorance, ability 
  77. and inability, comprehension and noncomprehension, perception and 
  78. nonperception, etc. Shu is a god of knowledge, the light of the sun. 
  79. With Tefnut's influence, Shuti is a god of active Satanic 
  80. enlightenment. We therefore expect the Order's Initiates to actively 
  81. contribute material to the _Scroll of Set_ and the _Ruby Tablet of 
  82. Set_. We also expect the Order's Initiates to participate in, 
  83. assist, and/or lead pylons as appropriate, whether local pylons, 
  84. pylons structured like the Gates of Hell, or otherwise.

  86. The Order will publish a newsletter. The publication schedule will 
  87. depend upon the quantity of material submitted. The majority of this 
  88. material will be Order specific, dealing with the topics mentioned 
  89. above. But reflecting Shuti's attribute of Enlightenment, the 
  90. newsletter can also be used to circulate drafts of articles destined 
  91. for the _Scroll of Set_ and the _Ruby Tablet of Set_, for feedback 
  92. and refinement before their official publication.

  94. The newsletter will also carry information useful to pylon leaders, 
  95. and may be used as a means of communication between pylon leaders.
  96. All II*+ Setians may subscribe to the newsletter. These 
  97. subscriptions will be automatic and without charge for active 
  98. members of the Order, Masters of the Temple of Set (as members of 
  99. honor), and pylon leaders. Others may request subscriptions by 
  100. writing to the Grand Master.

  102. Any II*+ Setian may apply for Initiation into the Order, by writing 
  103. to the Grand Master. There is no fee for Initiation or membership in 
  104. the Order. The only requirement is the ability and commitment to 
  105. Work within the above areas of concentration.
